What is Cal-GETC?
Cal-GETC is a new general education pattern launching in Fall 2025. Cal-GETC is for
students planning on transferring to a CSU (California State University) or UC (University
of California) campus.
Students who complete the full Cal-GETC GE pattern will have met the lower-division
(freshman and sophomore) general education requirements for the CSU and UC. Upon transfer,
students will only have to complete any junior general education requirements that
the university requires.
Note: Students planning on applying to a UC campus should check with a Skyline College counselor or assist.org to determine if Cal-GETC is recommended for their intended UC major. It might be
better for you to stay with IGETC.
Who is eligible for Cal-GETC?
- All students who are new to Skyline College beginning in Fall 2025
- Current Skyline College students who plan to enroll for Fall 2025 and beyond at Skyline College
I started Skyline College prior to Fall 2025. Can I use Cal-GETC?
If you plan on continuing your studies at Skyline College in Fall 2025 and/or beyond, you are eligible to use Cal-GETC. Cal-GETC becomes effective Fall 2025.
Students are advised to check with their Skyline College counselor to determine if switching to the Cal-GETC pattern is recommended for their intended major and transfer campus. For some students, staying with the CSU GE Breadth or IGETC pattern may be the best option.
What does Cal-GETC require?
A total of 34 units is required in the following 6 Areas of General Education:
General Education Areas | Course and Unit Requirement *Course units represented as semester units |

---|---|---|
AREA 1: English Communication | 1A English Composition (3.0) 1B Critical Thinking and Composition (3.0) 1C Oral Communication (3.0) |

What is the difference between Cal-GETC and the general education patterns used prior to Fall 2025?
View a comparison between the original options of CSU GE and IGETC versus the new option of Cal-GETC.
Comparison ChartDo I have to complete all of Cal-GETC to transfer to a CSU or UC campus?
You need to complete all required 34 units of Cal-GETC prior to transfer in order to certify completion.
This means you would not need to complete any additional lower-division (freshman and sophomore) general education after transfer. You would only need to complete any junior general education requirements required by your transfer university.
Note: Some majors may require full completion of Cal-GETC as an admissions requirement. Check with your Skyline College counselor to decide if Cal-GETC is the best option for you.

Campus Specific General Education
For some students, depending on their transfer college and major, completing a general education pattern such as Cal-GETC, CSU GE, or IGETC may not be the best option. In this case, students can complete the campus specific general education requirements. Campuses post their general education in their catalog and college websites.
Please meet with a Skyline College counselor to discuss if completing campus specific general education requirements would be the best option for you.
Common Course Numbering | CCN
What is Common Course Numbering (CCN)?
California Community Colleges have made it easier for students to transfer credits between schools with the new Common Course Numbering (CCN) system.
- Equivalent courses at California Community Colleges will be renamed with the same course number and name.
- Courses you have already completed will not change on your transcript. Don't worry about losing any progress!
- This update will make equivalent courses easier to identify and easier to transfer between the state's community colleges, CSU, and UC.
- The goal of CCN is to eventually align 300 of the most frequently enrolled community college classes throughout the state.

What does this mean for me in Summer 2025 and Fall 2025?
Summer 2025 course numbers will stay the same. When registering for Fall 2025 classes, students should use WebSchedule to look up the new course number, as listed in the table below.
Example:
- Summer 2025: If you want to take ENGL 100: Reading and Composition, look up ENGL 100 as usual.
- Fall 2025: If you want to take the same ENGL 100: Reading and Composition course, look for ENGL C1000 instead.
Course Number Map
Old Course | New Course (CCN) | Effective Date |
---|---|---|
ENGL 100: Reading and Composition | ENGL C1000: Academic Reading and Writing | Fall 2025 |
ENGL 105: Reading and Composition with Support | ENGL C1000E: Academic Reading and Writing | Fall 2025 |
ENGL 165: Composition, Argument and Critical Thinking | ENGL C1001: Critical Thinking and Writing | Fall 2025 |
PSYC 100: General Psychology | PSYC C1000: Introduction to Psychology | Fall 2025 |
COMM 110: Public Speaking | COMM C1000: Introduction to Public Speaking | Fall 2025 |
PLSC 200: National, State and Local Government | POLS C1000: American Government and Politics | Fall 2025 |
MATH 200: Elementary Probability & Statistics | STAT C1000: Introduction to Statistics | Fall 2025 |
Why does this matter to me?
Since the course numbers and titles are changing in Fall 2025, you want to make sure you do not accidentally repeat a course you took earlier.
Courses that have not been changed may continue to transfer the same way under previously agreed-upon transfer agreements between two-year colleges and four-year colleges.
Will classes that I took before Fall 2025 change to the new CCN?
Don't worry, you will not lose any progress!
Courses that you took before Fall 2025 will not change in your records. The same course name, number, and title will appear with the original course information on your official transcript.
If you passed a course before Fall 2025, you should not re-take the same course with the new title and number. The two courses will be equivalent: ex: If you already passed MATH 200 in a prior semester, you will not need to take STAT C1000.
You will see the old course number (ex: MATH 200) in your records for any of these classes taken before or during Summer 2025. Fall 2025 onward, students will see the new CCN (ex: STAT C1000). All Common Course Numbering courses start with a "C" in the course number.
When can we expect to see more courses with CCNs announced?
We expect to have 21 new CCNs in the Fall 2026 semester and 50 in the Fall 2027. More will be added each year until the goal of 300 is reached.
