Professional Development for Classified Staff
Skyline College permanent employees (after probationary period) are eligible to receive up to $2500 per fiscal year towards approved conference/seminar/workshop expenses. Employees who are detailing must apply at their home campus.
The San Mateo County Community College District recognizes that the quality of its educational offerings and services is enhanced by the professional growth and development of its employees.
Attending Workshops or Conferences
Eligibility
Classified Professional Development funds are available to classified employees who have completed probationary status. Skyline College Classified Professional Development Program supports the development of:
- Job-related skills and knowledge
- Knowledge and skills for professional advancement
- Work, life, balance associated with job performance
Funding Details
- Classified Professional Development funds are allocated on an annual basis (Fiscal Year: July 1 – June 30)
- Due to limited funding, applications are approved on a first-come, first-serve basis
- Applicants will be notified of the status of their application via email
- Classified Professional Development Funds are limited. Approval for reimbursement is not a guarantee
Application Process
Employees are encouraged to attend work-related professional conferences, workshops and seminars and may be reimbursed for the costs.
Please note: not following the required process may hinder your eligibility for funding.
Prior to the Conference/Workshop:
If you are interested in attending a workshop, conference or seminar:
- Complete the Skyline College Professional Development Application well in advance of the event
- 60 days in advance recommended. Minimum of 30 days.
- Obtain your supervisor’s approval and signature.
- Send the application packet to Administration Services at SkyAdminServices@smccd.edu
- Include backup registration info, travel estimates, etc. in your packet
- If requesting an Advance Check, complete the Conference Pre-Approval and Advance Form , including supervisor's signature.
- Check the ‘ADVANCE CHECK REQUESTED’ box at the top of the form.
- Applications will be reviewed by the Classified Professional Development Committee.
- You will be notified of final approval by the Skyline College Administration Office.
After the Conference/Workshop:
Classified Staff approved for Conference/Workshop Reimbursement must complete the following steps within 30 days of attendance or completion of the conference/workshop:
- Complete the Statement of Conference Expenses
- Gather your original approved PD Application, Advance/Pre-Approval Form, receipts, agenda, and other supporting documentation, and submit to your supervisor.
- Submit the approved packet to Administration Services at SkyAdminServices@smccd.edu for processing.

Tuition Reimbursement Application Process
Eligibility
Permanent employees who have completed their probationary period are eligible to receive up to $1,400 in tuition reimbursement per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Applications must also meet the following requirements:
- Coursework must be related to professional development (work-related skills and knowledge) or growth (advancing role within the institution), or part of a college degree program
- Courses must be taken at an accredited institution
- Applicant must receive a minimum grade of C in the course(s) receiving reimbursement
- Reimbursement is for tuition only (fees, books, meals, mileage, and related expenses are not included)
- Applicants are encouraged to discuss their long-term educational/professional development plans with supervisor(s)

Applicants participating in the District SMCCCD Pilot Tuition Reimbursement program are not eligible for Skyline Tuition Reimbursement for the same program.
Before Your Course(s) Begins:
- Complete the Skyline College Professional Development Application well in advance of the date of the event (60 days recommended, but minimum 30 days).
- Obtain your supervisor’s approval and have them sign the form.
- Forward the application packet (including tuition/registration cost information) to the Skyline College Administration Office at SkyAdminServices@smccd.edu.
- Your application will be reviewed by the Classified Professional Development Committee.
- After approval, you will be notified.
After Completing Your Course(s):
Classified Staff approved for Tuition Reimbursement must complete the following steps within 30 days of course completion:
- Complete the Request for Reimbursement Request with transcripts and proof of payment to your supervisor.
- Submit the approved packet to Skyline Administration Office at SkyAdminServices@smccd.edu for processing.
