What is B.E.A.M.S.?

The Black Educator Mentorship and Support Program is a community centered initiative at Skyline College designed to address the underrepresentation of Black educators in community colleges by preparing Black graduate students for full time, tenure track faculty roles.

Who is eligible to apply?

B.E.A.M.S. is intended for Black graduate students who are currently enrolled in a graduate program and who are interested in teaching at the community college level with the goal of pursuing faculty careers.

Is B.E.A.M.S. a paid opportunity?

Yes. Participants are hired as paid interns for the duration of the program.

Is this a fellowship or an internship?

B.E.A.M.S. is a paid internship focused on preparation for community college faculty roles. It is not a fellowship and does not confer academic credit.

Does participation guarantee a faculty position?

No. Participation in B.E.A.M.S. does not guarantee hiring. The program is designed to prepare participants to be competitive candidates for full time, tenure track community college faculty positions.

What is the time commitment?

B.E.A.M.S. is a semester length internship that requires consistent weekly engagement. Participants take part in mentorship, professional development, classroom observation, campus engagement, and independent work. Specific schedules are shared during onboarding.

What kinds of experiences will participants have?

Participants engage in mentorship with Black faculty, professional development focused on community college teaching and hiring, classroom observation, participation in department meetings and committees, and exposure to faculty governance and institutional life.

Do mentors receive training?

Yes. Faculty mentors participate in structured mentor training focused on effective mentorship, anti oppressive practices, and supporting graduate students preparing for faculty roles.

What materials are required to apply?

Applicants must submit a statement of interest in either written or video format, a resume or CV, and one reference. All materials are submitted through the online application form.

Can I submit a video instead of a written statement?

Yes. Applicants may choose to submit either a written statement or a short video statement. Both formats respond to the same prompts.

How are applications reviewed?

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Selected applicants may be contacted for a brief intake conversation to discuss alignment with program goals and expectations.
