Alternative Placement Exams*

*for English & math only, measure not available for ESOL placement.

Students who have completed an Alternative Placement Exams (see complete placement list below), and who achieve the required minimum test score result, may use the placement exam to place into college level English and/or math courses.

Notice to Transfer Students:

In addition to clearing English and/or math courses, results from the Advanced Placement Exam (AP) and International Baccalaureate Exam (IB) may be used to meet general education and/or major requirements at some four-year institutions. Students who have completed AP and IB exams should consult with a Skyline College counselor or determine if and how the exam(s) will clear for general education and/or major requirements at the student's intended transfer college. Minimum exam score requirements vary by college and major.

ENGLISH Placement: Exams & Score Requirements

  CAASPP Early Assessment Program (EAP)   A result of "Standard Exceeded: Ready for CSU or participating CCC college-level coursework in English"
  International Baccalaureate (IB) Exam   Score of 5 or higher on the IB Language A1/English HL exam
  College Board SAT Reasoning Test   Score of 500 or above on the Critical Reading section of the test
  American College Test (ACT)   Score of 22 or higher on the English test
  CSU English Placement Test (EPT)   Score of 147 or above

I qualify! What do I do now?

Students who wish to use an alternative placement exam to determine a placement for English and/or math courses at Skyline College will:

  1. Download/complete/sign a Skyline College Alternative Placement Exam Clearance Form  
  2. Write your full student name and SMCCD student ID number on the exam results copy
  3. Please attach all three (3) completed documents as one petition packet
  4. Deposit your petition packet to the Assessment Center's dropbox for review and approval (dropbox is located on the wall by the Assessment Center)

Results are available to the student via their WebSmart account within three (3) working days.
