Why should I meet with a Peer Mentor?
College can be confusing. As a new college student, you may find that you are expected to be more independent in your college journey than you were in high school. As a new student you may feel overwhelmed with the academic workload, with all of the new terms and processes like SEP (student educational plan), or how to navigate Websmart (the online student portal).
Peer Mentors can help you successfully navigate through all of these college processes by helping you connect to resources, understand the culture of college, and become part of a community of learners who have similar interests and goals. Peer Mentors provide a positive environment to help ease the adjustment to college life!
What is Peer Mentoring and how does it work?
The Peer Mentoring program at Skyline College leverages the skill and experience of continuing students who are selected and trained to facilitate academic and personal success outcomes for their fellow students (mentees). Specifically, Peer Mentors provide one-on-one and group support with the following outcomes in mind:
- Increase mentees knowledge about resources which may help them succeed in college
- Promote development of educational, leadership, career and learning goals
- Increase social engagement and sense of belonging for students
- Increase academic engagement and success
The goal of the Peer Mentoring program at Skyline College is to increase student retention and success for mentees by engaging them early in their academic journey to identify challenges and connect to the appropriate resources that will facilitate their success.
