Why should I meet with a mentor?

Working with a peer mentor is a great way to succeed in college. You’ll get to work one-on-one with experienced students on things like:

  • Academic coaching
  • Identifying challenges
  • Setting goals
  • Building skills

Peer mentors have experience in the classes you’re taking, and they’re ready to help you adjust to the culture of college and succeed in your classes.

What is peer mentoring and how does it work?

Peer mentors have your back. They’re students too, so they’re going through the same things you are. When you meet with a peer mentor, they’ll help you with the following:

  • Set goals and develop strategies to succeed in your classes
  • Improve time management and study skills
  • Expand educational, leadership, career and learning skills
  • Explore and connect to Skyline College services
  • Build a support network

What is Peer Mentoring and how does it work?

Peer Mentors are continuing students who leverage their own skills and expertise to help other Skyline College students have a successful education. Our mentors will work one-on-one with you to help identify challenges, set goals, and build skills. Specifically, Peer Mentors provide  support with the following outcomes in mind:

  • Increase mentees knowledge about resources which may help them succeed in college
  • Promote development of educational, leadership, career and learning goals
  • Increase social engagement and sense of belonging for students
  • Increase academic engagement and success

The goal of the Peer Mentoring program at Skyline College is to increase student retention and success for mentees by engaging them early in their academic journey to identify challenges and connect to the appropriate resources that will facilitate their success.
