First Semester

ESOL 840 (6 units, Composition IV)
ESOL 854 (3 units, Listening and Speaking Class)

These classes are linked and will require co-enrollment in both courses (co-requisites).

  • ESOL 840 (Composition) is designed for students who need to improve writing, reading, and speaking skills.
  • ESOL 854 (Listening and Speaking) prepares students to understand college lectures and participate in class discussions.
  • These courses share common topics, assignments and activities.
Second Semester

ESOL 400 (5 units, Composition/Transferable)
ESOL 875 (3 units, Advanced Grammar)

These classes are linked and will require co-enrollment in both courses (co-requisites).

  • ESOL 400 (Composition) is designed to support students’ writing and is the class before ENGL 100/105.
  • ESOL 875 (Advanced Grammar) supports ESOL 400 writing assignments and helps prepare students to be successful in academic and professional careers.
  • ESOL 875 is highly recommended for students with weak grammar skills.
  • Students who have previously struggled in ESOL 840 are recommended to take ESOL 400 with ESOL 875.
  • These courses share common topics, assignments and activities.
Third Semester

ENGL 105 (5 units, English Comp./Reading)
COMM 110 (3 units, Public Speaking)

These classes are linked and will require co-enrollment in both courses (co-requisites).

  • ENGL 105 (Intensive Composition) is the 5 unit equivalent of ENGL 100 and is recommended for most former ESOL students. The extra time with the instructor supports the needs of ESOL students with more time to work on remaining grammar issues and build background knowledge.
  • COMM 110 (Public Speaking) is advisable after students have successfully completed ESOL 400 as more advanced writing and research skills are needed to succeed in this class.
  • These courses share common topics, assignments and activities.
Fourth Semester

ENGL 110 (3 units, Composition, Literature & Critical Thinking)
HIST 235 (3 units, History of Ethnic Groups)

These classes are NOT LINKED.

  • ENGL 110 (Composition, Literature & Critical Thinking) is recommended for PACE students who want to continue with the PACE Learning Community and plan to complete a degree or transfer.
  • HIST 235 (History of Ethnic Groups) is a general education course and is recommended for PACE students who want to continue with the PACE Learning Community and plan to complete a degree or transfer.
