Alpha Gamma Sigma is a statewide community college honor society whose purpose is promoting, sustaining, and acknowledging academic achievement and organizing functions and events which provide cultural, social, leadership and enrichment experiences to the community college lifestyle.

At Skyline College new members must have completed a minimum of 12 graded college units and achieved a semester GPA of 3.30 or higher to be invited to join the local chapter. Continuing members must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher.

The scholarship, supported by the American Association of University Women, San Mateo Branch, is for SMCCCD students who demonstrates financial need and has definite plans to continue during the upcoming fall term at a four-year institution of higher learning accredited by the American Association of Colleges and Universities.

Scholarships are given in honor of the hardworking and dedicated women of the Assistance League, who for the past 55 years have enhanced the quality of life in the San Mateo community through their philanthropic projects. The League also extends financial assistance to help with community needs; seniors, infants, schoolchildren, special-needs adults, the homeless and victims of violence all receive its support.

George and Mildred Atkinson founded the Atkinson Foundation in 1939. They lived and raised their family in San Mateo and were active leaders in both national and local church, educational and community organizations. Mr. Atkinson was co- founder and president of the Guy F. Atkinson Construction Company headquartered in South San Francisco, an international construction and engineering firm.

The scholarship was created to assist and encourage students who might not otherwise have the financial resources to acquire the education needed for personal and professional self- sufficiency.

In his work as an appliance salesman for Sears and in his personal life, the uncle’s big smile made people feel welcome and appreciated; he himself never attended college but supported low-income students who were attending college.

Named in honor of Carl E. Ward, former member of the San Mateo County Community College District Board of Trustees from 1960 to 1979, this scholarship is based on financial need and academic achievement.

The San Bruno Community Foundation created the Crestmoor Neighborhood Memorial Scholarship in honor of the community members who most directly endured the destruction and resulting fire from the 2010 explosion, especially the eight San Bruno residents who lost their lives in the disaster.

With the Scholarship Program, the Foundation creates a living tribute to the Crestmoor neighborhood through an investment in San Bruno’s next generation of leaders. The Scholarship Program will ensure that the tragedy of September 9, 2010, is not forgotten and that the resiliency, teamwork, leadership, and commitment to the community displayed throughout San Bruno in the aftermath of the explosion and fire will be honored in the annual recipients of the Scholarship.

Dale Mersereau was a self-taught Southern California real estate developer with an interest in supporting higher education. Helen Mersereau taught school in the Los Angeles area for forty years. While both attended universities, neither obtained a degree.

The Honoring Mothers Memorial Scholarship is for a continuing Skyline College student. Recipients may be a re-entry student and demonstrates financial need.

The late John Iliff, professor of economics at CSM during the 1950s, left his entire estate to the College for the purpose of establishing a scholarship to help international students complete their education. The Osher Scholarships have been made possible by a generous commitment from the Bernard Osher Foundation, which donated $25 million to the Foundation for California Community Colleges to establish an endowment to provide permanent scholarship support to California Community College students. Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society for students in two-year colleges. Established at Skyline College in 1999, our Phi Theta Kappa Chapter is Beta Theta Omicron. Students who qualify for membership to Phi Theta Kappa must have completed at least 12 units of degree coursework, with at least a 3.50 GPA.

Every year, several Beta Theta Omicron members distinguish themselves and the Skyline Chapter that they represent by participating in local, as well as national, academic competitions.

This fund is in honor and memory of Richard A. Feyisayo Soyombo, who served as the Dean of Global Learning Programs and Services and as Director of the Bay Area Center for International Trade Development (CITD) at Skyline College. During his 17 years of service, Richard was instrumental in developing several programs: Energy System Technology Management, Hospitality and Tourism Management, African Diaspora, Freight Forwarding and Logistics, Youth Entrepreneurship Program, Bay Area Entrepreneurship Center, and the Skyline College – Links Liberian Girls Mentorship Program.

This scholarship is for full-time Skyline College student. Minimum 2.0 GPA and demonstrate financial need. The TRiO Scholarship is awarded to TRiO students who demonstrated an unmet financial need, receive a Pell award, have a minimum 2.5 GPA, are active in the program and provided a contribution to TRiO, Skyline College and/or the community.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide scholarship support to those students showing financial need and who indicate that they are planning to transfer to a 4-year institution following their time at Cañada College, College of San Mateo or Skyline College. The students educational plan shall reflect that they are planning to transfer to a 4-year university. These funds will support three students a year for up to three years during their time at Cañada College or College of San Mateo or Skyline College upon meeting the indicated criteria.

The Woo Family Scholarship is for a full time, graduating high school seniors, continuing, and transferring students. The student should demonstrate financial need and must have at least a GPA of 2.75 or above.

Special Awards Recognition

The Osher Scholarships have been made possible by a generous commitment from the Bernard Osher Foundation, which donated $25 million to the Foundation for California Community Colleges to establish an endowment to provide permanent scholarship support to California Community College students. The Osher Foundation established this endowment to support students who have demonstrated a commitment to completing their education and have certain financial hardships that make it difficult to pay for the cost of attending college.

The Crestmoor Scholarship honors the community members who most directly endured the destruction of the 2010 gas pipeline explosion and resulting fire and especially in memory of the eight San Bruno residents who lost their lives in the disaster. The Scholarship is a living tribute to the Crestmoor neighborhood through an investment in San Bruno’s next generation of leaders.

The Karl S. Pister Leadership Opportunity Program enables outstanding UC-qualified junior-level community college students to complete their undergraduate studies at UC Santa Cruz. The program provides a $20,000 scholarship distributed over two years, mentoring and academic support, and assistance finding paid or volunteer summer work experience.
