Occupation Information Databases:

Occupational Outlook Handbook: Latest information from the federal government on employment outlook, educational requirements, salary to expect - for most occupations.

O*NET OnLine: Explore occupations, identify your current job skills (and get a list of occupations that match your identified skills), discover related occupations, and get a snapshot of the skills and knowledge required for your selected occupation.

America's Career InfoNet: Occupational and employment information from America's Job Bank. Includes overviews of the job market for the U.S. and for all fifty states.

Career Voyages: Detailed information about the fastest growing industries and occupations, the skills and education required to prepare for them, job openings by area, and wages, licensing requirements and growth rates for numerous occupations." Includes information about "on-the-job training, apprenticeship programs for skilled trades, and two-year professional degree programs at community colleges." From the U.S. Departments of Labor and Education.

California Occupational Guides: Information covering individual occupations or groups of related occupations, including statewide information about job duties, working conditions, employment outlook, wage data (state, regional, and local; minimum wage; and prevailing wages), benefits, entrance requirements, and training.

California Occupational Outlook Reports: California county-by-county information on various occupations, including wages, employer benefits, skills, education, training and experience requirements, worker supply and demand assessment, advancement potential, occupational projections, employment trends, and recruitment.

Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates: Employment and wage estimates information by occupation from the federal government. The information is available at the national, state, and metropolitan area level. It is further categorized under managerial, professional, sales, clerical, service, agricultural, and production.


Job Postings Databases:

Monster.com: Largest online jobs database on the Web; search by company name, location, discipline, industry, job title, or combinations of these; employer overview gives some background information into the company selected, the products and services, and employee benefits.

Spherion Jobs: geographic, industry, and/or keyword search for thousands of jobs, updated daily; free resume posting to a database used by companies searching for employees.

JobWeb: Searchable database of job postings and Career Planning Resources: which includes a Career Library and Relocation, International, Minority, and Disability Resources.

CalJOBS: County-by-county listing of jobs from the California Employment Development Department (EDD).

JobStar Central: Library-sponsored guide to job-search resources on the Web focusing on California;connections to over 300 salary surveys.

Craigslist: Extensive local Bay Area job postings plus postings about community, housing, personals, etc.


Magazine, Journal & Newspaper Databases (to access articles):

InfoTrac OneFile Database: excellent general periodical database.
Available from off-campus--as long as you have a library card (library card bar code number is required).
 
  • To search only for articles that include the full text (the whole article) in the database, check the "articles with text" box under "Limit the current search" (below the text entry box)
  • To narrow searches, combine concepts with AND.
  • Once you find one article specifically on your topic, click on any relevant subject headings (near the bottom of the article page) to find more articles on that topic.
