The statewide Common Course Numbering (CCN) system is being implemented to streamline transfer and improve student success across California Community Colleges, as required by California Education Code through Assembly Bill 1111. This initiative ensures that similar courses across all community colleges will have the same course number. As a result, students can more easily identify equivalent courses, build clear academic plans, and understand how their credits apply to degree completion and transfer goals at four-year institutions such as the CSU and UC systems.

Templates are created by faculty from accross the state for how outlines for the common courses must be changed in order to align. As the templates come out, they are posted on the Statewide CCN Course Outline of Records Submission page.

The process of creating the templates and then updating the outlines to reflect those templates has many steps:

  • Discipline faculty around the state are given the opportunity to share their views in a pre-survey.
  • A few faculty are chosen to create the draft templates based on the C-ID for the course together with the pre-survey results.
  • Discipline faculty around the state are given the opportunity to share their views on the draft template in a post-survey.
  • Templates are finalized and sent to the local colleges.
  • Faculty modify the outlines and the curriculum committee approves the modifications.
  • The SMCCCD Board approves the modifications.
  • The new outlines are submitted to COCI.

The courses that will be using the common course numbering system have been broken up into three phases: Phase I, Phase II and Phase III. The following tables can be used to see what stage of the process the courses are in. For the courses that have templates already and the outlines are in the process of being modified, a link to the template is provided, but you can also find the templates on the Statewide CCN Course Outline of Records Submission page.

The drafts for the Phase III templates were created summer 2025. Post draft surveys to help inform final versions of the templates should be coming soon. This table will be color-coded and updated with links as we get more information. The projected date for the Phase III courses to go live is also Fall 2027 so ideally we get enough information in time to bring the courses through the Curriculum Committee in Spring 2026.
