Nursing 261/262 is a fourteen-week course designed to provide the experienced
RN with the basic knowledge and skills of perioperative nursing practice.
It prepares the practitioner to function at the novice level with the
potential for continued growth. The course consists of both didactic content
and clinical experience. The didactic portion is overseen by the course
coordinator; a clinical liaison instructor will coordinate clinical learning
activities. Additionally, each participant will have an assigned clinical
preceptor.
Both college credit and continuing education credit (through the College
of San Mateo, Provider No. 06916) are granted upon successful completion.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

Apply the principles of aseptic technique in the clinical setting

Communicate effectively with members of the surgical team

Prioritize perioperative nursing activities in the clinical setting

Analyze the role and knowledge base of the perioperative nurse in
various surgical specialty interventions

Demonstrate the ability to plan, implement and evaluate care for
perioperative patients

Apply critical thinking skills in perioperative nurse activities

Demonstrate progressive clinical competency in the performance of
perioperative nursing skills

Utilize knowledge of anesthesia and pharmacotherapy in the care of
patients experiencing surgical interventions

Apply principles of risk management to eliminate harm to patients
and reduce financial loss to the institution
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Participants must be California-licensed RNs and be sponsored by hospital
agencies who agree to provide a preceptor and site for the clinical learning
component. Participants must be able to comply with the course schedule.
COURSE SCHEDULE
Nursing 261/262 is 14 weeks in length, Monday through Friday. Twelve days
of didactic content are presented at Skyline College,
in the Surgical Careers Center (Bldg 3E). The remaining days comprise
the clinical learning component and are held at the sponsoring agencies.
Lecture days are generally scheduled from 0800 to 1600; clinical days
are generally from 0700 to 1530.
COURSE COST
Cost is approximately $350 for tuition, fees, and books for California
residents. Non-resident cost is approximately $1750.
