Recruitment is open for the Global Mentorship Program

The Global Mentorship & Leadership Project is actively recruiting students to participate in its pilot mentorship program: Education Across the Miles-Liberia.

The Global Mentorship & Leadership Project is designed to expose Skyline College students to mentorship and leadership through the African Diaspora. This is done through face to face mentoring sessions with local professionals, networking events and interacting with students from around the world, via international video-conferences. Education Across the Miles– Liberia, focuses on young women. All young women in the program are mentored by members of the SF Links, a professional service organization that’s committed to improving the lives of underserved youth. Five Skyline College students have been selected to participate in the program, all of whom interact with nine students from Liberia on a monthly basis.

The Global Mentorship Leadership Project is an initiative developed in partnership between the African Diaspora Program at Skyline College, the African American Success Though Excellence & Persistence Learning Community (ASTEP), and Grand Bassa Community College in Liberia and the San Francisco Chapter of the Bay Area Links, Inc., (SF Links) an international professional service organization primarily composed of professional African American women.

14th Annual President’s Breakfast a Huge Success

The community poured into the 14th Annual President’s Breakfast yesterday morning from 7:00 a.m. at the South San Francisco Conference Center.  The breakfast, hosted by Dr. Regina Stanback Stroud, President and the Skyline College President’s Council, is the primary fundraising event for the President’s Innovation Fund.  This fundraising event provides the community the opportunity to learn about the exceptional education offered at Skyline College and how the President’s Innovation Fund awards faculty and staff with seed money for creative programs and services.

Entrants were welcomed into the center by the Skyline College Men’s baseball players, Vince Lozano, Dabian Canales, Lance Montano, Ismael Orozco, Joey Carney, Nic Bongi, Aldo Severson, Mike Franco and the head Baseball coach, Dino Nomicos.   Once inside, attendees enjoyed coffee that was provided by City Toyota of Daly City.  ASSC President Kayla Razavi provided some inspiring welcoming remarks, indicating the continued support by the ASSC for the President’s Innovation Fund.  Event Co-chairs Theresa Proaño and Kirsten Pinochi set the stage for a baseball themed event.  Donning the Skyline College baseball jerseys, Kirsten and Theresa acknowledged the Spring Musical Performers, Skyline College students – past and present, faculty, staff, Past Presidents, the College Council, Deans, and administrators for their commitment and dedication.  LaMontè Bishop representing State Senator Mark Leno and Leslie Guevarra and Marc Hershman representing Senator Jerry Hill were acknowledged.  Assemblymember Kevin Mullin and his staff Virginia Kroger and Mario Rendon were thanked for their attendance.  Rober Chua attended representing Assemblymember Phil Ting.

7544The purpose of this annual breakfast is to showcase the President’s Innovation Fund programs that have funding from our community partners and to highlight a few.  We also took the opportunity to acknowledge donors who make these programs possible.

Special mention goes to our Innovation Patrons at the $2,500 level: Bank of the West, City of Brisbane, and Kaiser Permanente.  We are fortunate to have the Associated Students of Skyline College continue their support at the Innovation Patron $5,000 level. Our on-going partner, Pacific Gas & Electric Company, hosts this year’s breakfast at the “Dream out Loud” $7,500 level. Finally we continue to have to come up with new ways to describe this last sponsor who has hit a grand slam this year!  We are so pleased to announce our $35,000 Premiere Presenting Sponsor – The San Mateo County Community College District Auxiliary Services & Enterprise Operations under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Tom Bauer!  The entire list of PIF investors can be viewed here.

Vice Chancellor Tom Bauer provided inspirational remarks explaining why he and his team are so supportive of the effort.  He announced the successful textbook rental program at Skyline College that has now resulted in saving students close to a million dollars since its inception a few years ago.  Quoting Trustee Tom Mohr, he said that he was committed to closing the economic and opportunity divide between middle class students and so many community college students.

President Stanback Stroud joined Vice Chancellor Bauer on stage to receive the giant replica of the $35,000 check.  Dr. Stroud extended sincere expressions of gratitude to everyone, while acknowledging the executive administrators in attendance, Dr. Sarah Perkins and Eloisa Briones along with the esteemed faculty, staff, students and administrators of Skyline College.  Special thanks and acknowledgement was given to Chancellor Ron Galatolo and the SMCCCD team members, Vice Chancellors Nuñez, Keller, Blackwood and Bauer. Both presidents of Cañada College and College of San Mateo were in attendance and were thanked for their continued support – One team indeed.

The lights were then dimmed for a touching video created by Brian Kingston of Kingston Media, featuring the PIF Programs.  The student speaker in the video, Carolyne Cornett, described her journey and the impact the SparkPoint Center has had on her life.  As she finished telling her story from homelessness to hope, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.  She made it apparent that the donations really do make a difference in the lives of the students.

1671Each year a speaker is selected to serve as spokespersons who will reflect on the impact that the PIF program has had on them.  This year we heard from Pcyeta Stroud.  Mrs. Stroud is a mentor in the African Diaspora Program and the Program Services Coordinator of the Youth Entrepreneurship Program, founded by the Center for International Trade and Development, now located in the newly formed Global Learning Programs and Services Division.  Pcyeta says that her job is to serve students in a way that enables them bring their creative ideas to life in the form of newly created businesses, furthering their own professional development or furthering their education.  She told her story, her journey and how PIF not only changed the lives of the students in the YEP program but her life as well.  Two student speakers followed her with statements of their journey and the ways YEP has changed their lives.  Both students, Sam Uce Veu and Nancy Peng entered and won the YEP Business Plan Competition.

The event culminated in the most creative and fun ask ever…..the cast of Avenue Q, students and puppets sang “Gimme your money!” in a way that roused the audience and inspired giving.  President Stanback Stroud closed the event by announcing the winers of the baseball themed basket centerpieces that were created by Kirsten Pinochi and the Recology team.

Initial tallies of the receipts are at approximately $118,000 – shy of the $150,000 goal but an impressive increase over last year’s receipts.  If you are interested in making a donation to the President’s Innovation Fund you may still do so at the Foundation Donation Page. Revamped SI Program at Skyline College

SI LogoFall 2013 was the kick-off semester for the revamped SI program at Skyline College. Seventeen SI Leaders conducted sessions for 22 classes, including English 828 and 846, and Math 811 and 190. Spring 2014 sees the addition of ESOL 400, Math 120 and English 100. 9 new SI Leaders have joined the program for spring 2014, and along with new SI faculty they took part in two days of training on January 8th and 9th preceding the first week of the semester.  Get more  information about the SI Program at Skyline College

President’s Suite Wins a McCafe Breakfast Party

mcds600To kick off a McDonald’s two-week promotion offering a free small coffee at any participating location, the staff in the President’s Suite enjoyed a McCafe Breakfast Party on Monday, March 31. Keisha Ford, the Visual Communications Coordinator, entered the drawing sponsored by Star 101.3FM and was selected as the sole Bay Area winner. Wai-Ling Eng, the Owner/Operator of the McDonald’s location on Westborough and Gellert, and her daughter Stephanie presented the office with breakfast and spoke briefly of the organization’s charitable partnerships as the team enjoyed McDonald’s new egg white McMuffin sandwiches (only 250 calories) and McCafe coffee.

After the announcement that she had won, McDonald’s asked Keisha why she thought her office deserved the special treatment. She responded, “Thank you! We are extremely grateful to be the recipients of a McCafe party! As a community college, we work hard to meet the needs of every student that enters our campus. Our staff in the President’s Suite, a small group of 25 people, serves a campus of over 10,000 students, faculty and staff and often pulls together outside of our individual areas of responsibility to ensure the campus runs as smoothly as possible.

Aside from the day-to-day tasks, most recently our team rallied for our annual fundraising breakfast to ensure that some of our innovative projects such as the College Lecture Series, the Center for Innovative Practices through Hip Hop Education & Research (CIPHER) and the Youth Entrepreneurship Program (YEP) remain funded. Our College mission statement is ‘To empower and transform a global community of learners.’ Our office strives to meet this goal every day. I am proud to work with such committed individuals and happy to share this with them.”
With the start of spring break and auxiliary services closed on campus, the timing of the party was perfect and the third floor staff enjoyed the moment of fellowship. To take advantage of your free McCafe coffee, visit a participating McDonalds between now and April 13.

Students Juried into American Museum of Ceramics Art Exhibition

The American Museum of Ceramic Art, AMOCA, located in Pomona California, is preparing to host their biannual ceramic art exhibition. It is called kilnopening.edu, and it focuses on the artwork of ceramics professors and their students.  In past years the exhibition was limited to Southern California colleges and universities, but this year invitations were extended to several Northern California professors.  Tiffany Schmierer, Associate Professor of Art at Skyline College, was invited to exhibit her work and was also asked to choose two of her students to compete for spots in the juried student category. She selected Ceramics III students Pauline Maccay and Andriaj Cirkelis to apply.  The museum’s Associate Curator, Rody Lopez, selected both students’ sculptures for the show.  Pauline’s piece, called Sheep in Wolf’s Clothing, is a playful twist on a familiar fable. Andriaj’s figurative sculpture Angel is a seated winged guardian, painted in soft floral colors.  All their work will be on display at the Museum from April 12, 2014 to June 1, 2014. Phi Theta Kappa All California Academic Award Winners

Skyline College students Irene Yim and David Zay Latt were honored April 3, 2014 at a luncheon in Sacramento sponsored by the Community College League of California. Awardees were members of the Phi Theta Kappa Society who have demonstrated the highest level of academic achievement.  There were 25 students from around the state who were selected for the All-California First Team, and 26 students from around the state who were selected for the All-California Second Team .

They represent the best of the two million students enrolled in California’s 122 community colleges. Irene Yim was selected for the All-California Academic First Team.  In addition, she was awarded a Coca-Cola scholarship.  Irene is a double major in Food Science and Microbiology with a 3.7 GPA.  She is the co-president of Skyline College’s Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers.  She was the 2013 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students winner in microbiology for her undergraduate research presentation.  She was previously president of Skyline Colleges chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, where she helped develop a science service project for middle school science programs called SMiLE (Science for Middle school Laboratory Experience).

As the coordinator for SMiLE Irene has promoted the importance and fun of hands-on learning for more than 600 middle school students and provided service-leadership opportunities for Skyline College students. David Zay Latt was selected for the All-California Academic Second Team.  David is a Political Science major and has a 3.91 GPA.  David is currently serving as the student trustee for the SMCCCD Board of Trustees.  He has received a Distinguished Service award from the Skyline College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa for his active service.  He has started a Model United Nations Club at Skyline College, after having enjoyed participating in one throughout high school.  In 2013 he received the Geraldine H. Read Memorial Award from the World Affairs Council of Northern California for his commitment to student engagement in international affairs.

Mother’s Day Specials in Cosmetology

Looking for a special gift for Mother’s Day? Why settle for the old standard of flowers and chocolate when you can treat Mom to a day-long pampering session at the Salon & Spa at Skyline College? Just in time for Mother’s Day, the Cosmetology, Esthetics and Fashion Merchandising departments will join forces for a special occasion: a decades-themed photo shoot. Most busy moms have spent some time in sweats and a ponytail feeling decidedly unglamorous. Now they can enjoy a two-part special sure to remind them of their natural beauty.

Part one: Photo Shoot. On April 18th moms will meet with a hair and makeup team to transform them into a 1920′s flapper, 1950′s bombshell, 1960′s mod, 1970′s glamazon or 1980′s alpha female. A professional photographer will help each “mommy model” strike the poses best suited to her new retro look with appropriate accessories and backgrounds.

Part two: Spa Package. On May 10th, just before Mother’s Day, the spa is open for business and ready to pamper each mom that walks through the door. Three levels of spa packages all include two complimentary 8×10 photos and a CD of images from the photo shoot, as well as a combination of luxurious spa treatments. Mom could spend her day getting a facial, mani/pedi, makeup application, blowout or all of these services. She is sure to feel the love from her family with such a deal!

CSU Northridge Representative Visits International Students Program

On March 17, 2014, the International Students Program hosted a college visit by representative from California State University (CSU) – Northridge. Stacey Chen, International Outreach Counselor at CSU – Northridge, was welcomed and given a tour of the campus and program by Chris Rico, ISP interim Project Director, Diane Arguijo, SMCCCD International Education Director, and Richard Soyombo, Dean of Global Learning Programs. This visit was made possible in collaboration with the San Mateo Colleges with a goal to enhance our partnership with four-year institutions and further support our students and transfer program.

Spring 2014 New International Students Orientation Day

international-studentOn January 7, 2014, the International Students Program (ISP) at Skyline College sponsored the New International Student Orientation Day which included orientation, placement testing, and counseling. For Spring 2014 semester, the ISP program has welcomed and enrolled 32 new international students to the College; this is in addition to approximately 70 students currently enrolled. This mandatory event highlights some important guidelines on how to succeed as an F-1 student, and provides useful information regarding immigration rules and regulations, housing, transportation, and other key campus and community resources.

The day started off with a welcome and introduction of staff by Chris Rico, interim ISP Project Director. The event speakers were Richard Soyombo, Dean of Global Learning Programs, and Dr. John Mosby, Dean of Enrollment Services. Diane Arguijo, SMCCCD International Education Director, was also on hand to welcome new international students to the District and conduct a short survey of our students. The day’s program was divided into three sessions: 1) Campus/Academic Information; 2) How to Succeed as an International Student, and; 3) Student Support Information. In the afternoon, students were given an opportunity to interact with their fellow ISP students and ask questions in the Q&A part of the program.

The ISP program provides academic and personal support to students as they transition to the American culture and way of life. Moreover, The program helps manage projects that supports international education and strive to enhance partnership with programs such as the Study Abroad Program, African Diaspora Program, and Youth Entrepreneurship Program (YEP) to name a few.

“Inequality For All” film Screening

The Social Science/Creative Arts Division is hosting a film screening of a must-see, powerful documentary on April 23rd & April 24th. INEQUALITY FOR ALL follows Robert Reich – professor, best-selling author, and Clinton cabinet member – as he demonstrates how the widening income gap has impacted the American economy. The film premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and was recently released in theaters nationwide by The Weinstein Co.

Skyline College Hosts International Educator Conference

NAFSA conference photoOn April 1st more than 150 participants gathered from colleges and universities around Northern California to share ideas and build connections during a regional conference of NAFSA – the worlds largest association of international educators. Session topics ranged from international student advising issues to biculturalism to study abroad and campus internationalization. The event was hosted by Skyline College’s new Global Learning Programs & Services team in collaboration with NAFSA.

YEP Business Plan Competition Spring 2014

YEP’s Spring 2014 Business Plan Competition is currently underway! The Youth Entrepreneurship Program at Skyline College (YEP), has officially kicked off this semester’s bi-annual competition with a series of exciting orientations and workshops.

BPC_Finals_F2013.8On March 11th, YEP held its second Orientation & Workshop for the Business Plan Competition. The orientation was designed to give the students an in-depth view of the competition and an opportunity to ask questions. The orientation will be followed by a public speaking workshop led by renowned public speaking expert and local business owner, Mike Neuendorff. All students enrolled any other the District’s three colleges are welcomed to participate. Students participating in the competition are eligible to receive one-on-one coaching and mentoring from business owners, CITD representatives and faculty to refine and perfect their business plans. Cash prizes will be awarded to three winning business plans to help support their start-up business ideas.

The competition will culminate in a Final’s Round. Students will have the opportunity to present or “pitch” their business plans to a panel of industry judges from various business backgrounds, and a chance to receive immediate feedback and suggestions to include in their plans. All plans that advance on to the finals round will be in the running for cash prizes totaling $3500!

We would like to invite all faculty, students and staff to attend the Finals Round & Awards Ceremony.
