Through events and activities, Skyline College Library creates opportunities to deepen students’ understanding of social justice issues and expose students to diverse perspectives. All members of the Skyline community are invited to participate in three Thursday events this Fall.

On Thursday, September 29 at 2pm please join us in person at the Library for a reading and discussion: Writers under attack: Salman Rushdie, Banned Books, and Freedom of Expression. Bring a favorite banned book to read from, share an experience when your freedom of expression was curtailed, or just listen in. More information is available here: bit.ly/WritersUnderAttack.

On Thursday, October 20 at 2pm, the Human Library returns! If you’re not familiar, The Human Library is a virtual event where any member of our community can enjoy a conversation with a “human book,” usually a member of our community. It’s an opportunity to ask questions about their lives and the stories they have chosen to share, and receive honest answers in return. Spread the word: students who are interested in sharing their story as a human book should please fill out this participation interest form: bit.ly/BeABook. All participants can find more information here, including description of past books in the Human Book Archive.

Last but not least, you’ll want to save Thursday, November 17 for our third annual reading in celebration of our own multilingual community, “International Poetry in Many Tongues.” This event takes place via Zoom at 4:30 p.m.. You can bring an original or favorite poem to share aloud in your native tongue, or just listen in. More details will be forthcoming.

Questions? Please contact Pia Walawalkar, Equity and Outreach Librarian <walawalkars@smccd.edu>.

We look forward to seeing you.
