Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center on campus or off-campus w/ library card
Database of viewpoint articles, topic overviews, statistics, primary documents, links to websites, and full-text magazine and newspaper articles on social issues.

  • Click on the list of many social issues to choose from or search for a specific topic not on the list.
  • After clicking on a social issue or doing a search, you will see links to "Viewpoint essays" on that issue. Additional documents on the issue-- including Reference articles, Statistics, Magazine articles, Primary documents & more-- are available by clicking on the appropriate tabs at the top of the page.

Books:

The PLS Online Catalog is the online catalog to find books in Skyline Library and in all libraries in the Peninsula Library System.
After clicking on the link above to access the catalog, follow the steps below:

To search for books in all libraries in the PLS system:

·         Type search words (keep your search words broad) in the first search box & click Submit.

Six book series that provide a variety of opinions on various social issue topics are:

-          At Issue,
- Contemporary Issues,
- Current Controversies,
- Opposing Viewpoints,

- Point-counterpoint
- Taking Sides
.

 To narrow your search to one of these book series, enter the series title after the name of your topic.

·         The search results will show books and other materials in all libraries in the PLS system.

·         To Limit your search results to materials at Skyline College Library:

·         Click on Modify Search near the top of the screen.

·         You will be brought back to the search screen and your search term(s) will reappear.

·         Scroll down to the Location selection box (2nd box under Limit to: below the search boxes),

·         select Skyline College in the Location box,

·         then click the Submit button.

To search for books only in Skyline College Library:

  • Type search words (keep your search words broad) in the first search box.

General Info on Popular Social Issues:

IDEA Debatabase: Database for students wishing to research topics for debate, containing hundreds of topics, each with basic arguments for and against a controversial proposition.

Best Information on the Net: Hot Paper Topics: Annotated links to websites that are concerned with many controversial issues complied by the librarians at St. Ambrose University.

Social Issues: Links to sources for "researching current social issues from multiple perspectives." The three dozen highly relevant topics include: abortion; affirmative action; AIDS; animal rights; capital punishment; censorship; child labor; children's rights; civil rights; creation science vs. evolution; drugs and drug abuse; drunk driving; euthanasia & assisted suicide; famine; flag burning; gangs; gender issues; genetic engineering; global warming; homelessness; homosexuality; immigration; national debate topic; organ & body donation; prayer in schools; sweatshops; violence in schools; welfare; and world population. Global Policy Forum: Global Injustice and Inequality: Excellent documents, articles and links on a wide range of issues, including: Inequality of Wealth and Income Distribution, Gender and Inequality, Labor Rights and Labor Movements, Corporate Crisis & Globalization from the Global Policy Forum, an organization designed to "monitor global policy making at the United Nations."

FindLaw: Internet Legal Resources: The best single starting point on the Web for doing legal research. Full text searchable database of all law reviews and journals on the Internet. Updated nightly. Another search interface, LawCrawler, helps you focus your search on legal issues on the Web. Also includes Legal News, legal forms, organizations, law firms and lawyers, judicial opinions and case law, consultants, and more.

Internet Law Library: Contains links to over 7,500 law related resources in subjects such as U.S. federal laws, state and territorial laws, international laws, laws of all jurisdictions arranged by subject, attorney and legal professional directories, law school library catalogs and directories, and reviews of law books. The current U.S. Code and Code of Federal Regulations can also be searched from the home page.


Government Documents
:

U.S. Government Documents Ready Reference Collection: A Web site of frequently used government titles at Columbia University Library with their equivalent Web links. While this is not a comprehensive government publications listing, it is never-the-less, a handy directory to popular government reports on topics such as business, crime, education, energy, environment, health, and transportation.

Frequently Used Sites Related to U.S. Federal Government Information: This is a directory of links to popular government documents on the Internet. The links are organized by topics including major government indexes, business, crime, census, congress, consumer information, copyright, education, foreign countries, health, impeachment, natural resources, law, scientific reports, and tax forms.

Election Issues
:

California Voter Foundation: Home of the California voter guide for past and upcoming elections, as well as the San Francisco Voter guide. Find information about statewide ballot measures as well as Presidential, congressional, legislative, and local candidates running in California. Excellent resource. Also tracks doners to propositions and various campaign finance data and issues including linking to CAL-ACCESS, the campaign contributions and expenditures database maintained by the Secretary of State.

Follow the Money: Monitors campaign contributions by individuals, businesses, special interest groups, and industry sectors for state elections held 1990 through 1998. Visitors may search the database for contributions by people or groups in one or more elections; view summary reports for selected states; or read analyses of specific elections and spending patterns by special interest groups (such as the National Rifle Association and the gambling industry). Data is not available for all states for all years. Data is supplied by government agencies within each state, then compiled by the nonpartisan, nonprofit National Institute on Money in State Politics.
