HOW LONG IN US? (53 kb)
-Jose has been in the U.S. since he was a teenager.  He’s been living here for more than thirty years.

 

America is hometown now

1ST LANGUAGE (38 kb)
-Jose’s first language spoken was the primary language in the PI, which is tagalog.

POSITIVE EXPERIENCES (111 kb)
-Jose matured at an early age and was able to get a good job.

NEGATIVE EXPERIENCES (156 kb)
-Being a teenager in Portland, Jose luckily did not experience first hand racism but felt it.

-Manila is a mega city with lots of traffic and noise with a huge population.

 

Manila is a big, loud city.

-Luckily, there was no first hand racism, but after moving to San Francisco, there was more diversity.

FAMILY ENVIRONMENT (257 kb)
-Family is first for Jose back in the Philippines and the US.

-Being a minority, you must prove that you are no different than Americans.

School is not expensive in the Philippines.  Jose did not work during school.

-Jose has four kids.  He wants them to be independent and see the real world.

ADVICE?  (493 KB)

-Jose says do something you love because you will do it for the rest of your life.  Finish school!
