National Center for Education Statistics (NCES): Primary source for education statistics from the U.S. Dept. of Education.

Report Card on American Education: State-by-state analysis of academic achievement, covering 1976-2001

Education Finance Statistics Center: Info on U.S. K-12 public and private education finance, plus graphs and charts depicting national and state comparison data. From the NCES.

Condition of Education: Annual report from the NCES reviews 65 indicators on the most significant national measures of the condition and progress of education.

International Comparisons in Education: International comparative education data from major international studies and links to additional resources on international education comparisons and related topics.

Kids Count Census Data: Indicators of child well-being from the 2000 U.S. Census.

National Center for Children in Poverty: Information and resources on child poverty in the U.S.

Chronicle of Higher Education 2003- 2004 Almanac: a wide range of data on American higher education, including: college enrollment trends, demographics, faculty pay, tuition and fees, and much more.  Searchable by state.

California Community College Chancellor's Office Data Mart: California community college statistics, including: Student Demographics, Student Program Awards, Student Services Programs, Program Retention/Success Rates, Staffing Reports

California Department of Education: Data & Statistics: Links to most state educational data & statistics

Dataquest: Demographic data reported by the school district to the California Department of Education, includes location, legislative districts and members, school demographics, student counts, technology, alternative education enrollment, students by ethnic group, limited-English-proficient (LEP) students, certified and classified staff, teaching credentials, teachers by ethnic groups, teachers for LEP students, average class size, and links to STAR test results. Site also links to a glossary explaining the elements in the profile. Site is awkward to navigate. Read the instructions carefully.

API: Academic Performance Index: This Web site contains summary reports and information of the Academic Performance Index (API) for California schools, searchable by county, district, and school. Included are results for California Stanford 9 STAR tests, the Spanish Assessment of Basic Education (SABE/2) test results, score explanations and comparisons, and more. Data is presented in API Reporting Cycles and can be downloaded in DBF or ASCII format. From the California Department of Education, Office of Policy and Evaluation.

Children Now: California Report Card 2002: Factors for School Success: Children Now, a nonpartisan, independent voice for children, recognized nationally for its policy expertise and up-to-date information on the status of children, produces this annual California Report Card and accompanying County Data Book documenting how economic, health and other conditions affect children's learning and how California children are doing, county by county, in terms of their economic security, health, safety and educational outcomes.

Ed-Data Education Data Partnership: Fiscal, demographic and performance data on California's K-12 schools.

California Public Schools Guide (GreatSchools.net):
Excellent database for comparing public elementary, middle, or high schools in California. Created by an
independent, non-profit organization, GreatSchools database provides standardized test results, school district standards, demographics, and diversity information for each school. Many schools have expanded profiles, which include curriculum; the community and its culture; staffing; school climate and safety, and much more. Links are provided for individual schools' Web sites, too. This site also includes information about choosing schools, the enrollment process, and creating parent-school partnerships.
