Ethnic Newswatch - on campus or off-campus w/ library card
Full-text articles from about 200 newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press, in English and Spanish. Enter key words for your search topic in the "Words in Articles" box on the Search screen and click on the "Submit Search" button.

Lexis Nexis Academic Universe - on-campus OR off-campus w/ library card
Full-text articles from a wide range of news, business & other publications.

E.R.I.C. database: freely available on the Web, no password required. This is the most comprehensive database available for education journal articles, but it only includes abstracts, no full text of journal articles. To order the full text of ERIC documents, ask a librarian.

Getting Down to Facts: A Research Project Examining California’s School Governance and Finance Systems: This research project of more than 20 studies--released in March 2007-- was designed to provide California’s citizens with comprehensive information about the status of the state’s school finance and governance systems.

California’s K-12 Public Schools: How Are They Doing?: This Jan. 2005 report from the Rand Corporation describes California’s K-12 public schools — specifically, their student population, the resources they are provided (finances, teachers, facilities), and their outcomes. It describes both student academic achievement and outcomes that schools may influence and that are inadequately captured in test scores. The report analyzes trends within the state and compares California to other states and to the nation as a whole.  To view the full report, click on “Full Document” (on the lower half of the page.)

Equality & Education (a project of The Century Foundation): "Examining the causes of inequality in our schools, analyzing reform proposals, and offering new possibilities to policymakers..." "The Century Foundation is a research foundation that undertakes timely and critical analyses of major economic, political, and social institutions and issues, [including some reports on educational issues]. Nonprofit and nonpartisan."

Education Week Issues Pages: The web site of Education Week, a leading weekly magazine for professional educators, includes these pages that "contain brief but thorough background essays on key education issues in America today.”  Free registration is required.  Each page includes links to definitions of related education terms and to relevant stories from the Education Week and Teacher Magazine archives."

Public Policy Institute of California: Education: Non-partisan research reports on California education issues.

Public Agenda Online: Education: This site addresses 18 controversial issues including a page on: education. Extensive information on each issue includes an overview, facts and trends, different perspectives, links to news stories, and results of public opinion polls.

Inequality.org: This site presents "news, information and expertise on the divide in income, wealth and health."

Challenging Racial Inequality in Education: Part 1: California's "Savage" Inequalities: This is a section of article from In Motion Magazine by Pedro A. Noguera, Ph.D. is Associate Professor, Graduate School of Education and Director, Institute for the Study of Social Change, University of California, Berkeley. It is part of a regular column titled "Education Rights".

Decent Schools for California: Williams v. State of California: Information on this class action lawsuit that was filed by the ACLU and others to achieve decent schools for all California schoolchildren.

Education Statistics:

National Center for Education Statistics (NCES): Home page of the primary source for education statistics from the U.S. Department of Education.

Education Finance Statistics Center: Info on U.S. K-12 public and private education finance, plus graphs and charts depicting national and state comparison data. Use the "Peer Search" to select any school district and get comparable data from similar-sized districts around the country. From the NCES.

California Department of Education: Data & Statistics: Demographic data about California's public schools and school districts, including Dataquest, demographic data reported by all school districts that provide: location, legislative districts and members, school demographics, student counts, technology, alternative education enrollment, students by ethnic group, limited-English-proficient (LEP) students, certified and classified staff, teaching credentials, teachers by ethnic groups, teachers for LEP students, average class size, and links to STAR test results.

API: Academic Performance Index: This Web site contains summary reports and information of the Academic Performance Index (API) for California schools, searchable by county, district, and school. Included are results for California Stanford 9 STAR tests, the Spanish Assessment of Basic Education (SABE/2) test results, score explanations and comparisons, and more. Data is presented in API Reporting Cycles and can be downloaded in DBF or ASCII format. From the California Department of Education, Office of Policy and Evaluation.

Children Now: California Report Card 2006-07: Children Now, a nonpartisan, independent voice for children, recognized nationally for its policy expertise and up-to-date information on the status of children, produces this annual California Report Card and accompanying County Data Book documenting how economic, health and other conditions affect children's learning and how California children are doing, county by county, in terms of their economic security, health, safety and educational outcomes.

Ed-Data Education Data Partnership: Fiscal, demographic and performance data on California's K-12 schools.

California Public Schools Guide (GreatSchools.net):
Excellent database for comparing public elementary, middle, or high schools in California. Created by an
independent, non-profit organization, GreatSchools database provides standardized test results, school district standards, demographics, and diversity information for each school. Many schools have expanded profiles, which include curriculum; the community and its culture; staffing; school climate and safety, and much more. Links are provided for individual schools' Web sites, too. This site also includes information about choosing schools, the enrollment process, and creating parent-school partnerships. 

Condition of Education: Annual report from the NCES reviews 65 indicators on the most significant national measures of the condition and progress of education.

Kids Count Census Data: Indicators of child well-being from the 2000 U.S. Census.

National Center for Children in Poverty: Information and resources on child poverty in the U.S.
