The PLS Online Catalog is the online catalog to find books in Skyline Library and in all libraries in the Peninsula Library System. After clicking on the link above to access the catalog, follow the steps below:

  • Type search words (title, author and/or subject) in the first search box & click Submit.
  • The search results will show books and other materials in all libraries in the PLS system.

  • To Limit your search results to materials at Skyline College Library:

·         Click on Modify Search near the top of the screen.

·         You will be brought back to the search screen and your search term(s) will reappear.

·         Scroll down to the Location selection box (2nd box under Limit to: below the search boxes),

·         select Skyline College in the Location box,

·         then click the Submit button.

Brown v. Board of Education:

In Pursuit of Freedom & Equality: Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka: Sponsored by the Brown Foundation for Educational Equity, Excellence and Research, this site includes: an overview and summary of the Brown case, a discussion of court cases from 1849-1949 which were in prelude to Brown, background on each of the five cases which comprised the Brown case, biographical information on participants in the Brown case. full text of decisions related to the Brown case from the U.S. Supreme Court and lower federal courts, an electronic exhibit, a tour of Brown sites in Topeka and bibliography of books related to the Brown case.

Landmark Cases: Brown v. Board of Education (1954): full range of resources and activities to support the teaching of the case, including classifying arguments for each side, political cartoon analysis, text of majority opinion & more.

Brown v Board Of Education National Historic Site: Official National Park Service site, located in Topeka, KS.

Segregation Through the Lens: African American Schools in Mississippi before Integration: Collection of images of black public schools taken during the 1940s and 1950s is part of various studies and surveys conducted by the Bureau of Educational Research at the University of Mississippi.


Civil Rights & the 1950's:

Little Rock High 40th Anniversary: This site is devoted to the history of a landmark event in the history of school integration in the American South. In 1957, nine African-American high school students were the first to enroll in the all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Fearing an explosion of violence, President Eisenhower ordered that troops of the National Guard be brought in to protect the students. The site contains photos, videos (QuickTime), and newspaper articles of the time, as well as an update on the nine students and coverage of the dedication of the Central High Visitor Center on the 40th anniversary of the historic events.

Powerful Days in Black & White: the Civil Rights Photography of Charles Moore Charles Moore was a photojournalist for Life during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The photographs speak for themselves, organized into subject headings: Ole Miss, Birmingham, Freedom Marching, Voter Registration, Ku Klux Klan, and Martin Luther King. There is also biographical material about Charles Moore. "Created in the spirit of remembrance and future education" by a journalism student at Ohio University.

Black History & the Civil Rights Movement: African American history site from the New York Institute for Special Education

How Race Was Lived in America: A Decade-by-Decade Selection of Articles from the N.Y. Times: Articles from the late 1800's to 2000.

Malcolm X: A Research Site: Information about the former Nation of Islam activist and articulate spokesman for the concept of racial pride in the early 1960s. Included are a chronology of his life, a bibliography of his writings with some links to online texts, an annotated Webliography with links to other sites, and a study guide which provides a brief introduction to the life and ideas of this man whose birth name was Malcolm Little and Muslim name Malik Shabazz.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Papers Project at Stanford University: "Historical information concerning Martin Luther King, Jr. and the social movements in which he participated," including papers, speeches, sermons, a biography, an excerpt from his autobiography, a chronology, articles and related links.

Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin: Openly gay activist Bayard Rustin "organized the 1963 March on Washington that culminated in King's 'I Have a Dream' speech. Learn more about his legacy of protest and the making of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. ... Read original essays by Bayard Rustin and listen to recordings of Rustin's speeches and songs, including his famous 1962 debate with Malcolm X."
