Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center on campus or off-campus w/ library card
Database of viewpoint articles, topic overviews, statistics, primary documents, and magazine, journal and newspaper articles on social issues.

  • Click on “Capital punishment” from the list of social issues on the right or search for a specific topic not on the list.
  • After clicking on a social issue or doing a search, you will see links to "Viewpoint essays" on that issue. Additional documents on the issue-- including Reference articles, Statistics, Magazine, Journal and News articles, Primary Sources & more-- are available by clicking on the appropriate tabs at the top of the page.
  • For more specific searches, use the Advanced Search mode to combine concepts (click on Advanced on the blue task bar at top).

The Death Penalty Curriculum
This site includes pro and con viewpoints, stages of a capital case, history, and how each method of execution is carried out. Interactive U.S. maps in State by State Data show executions and death row inmates by ethnicity, gender, or juveniles; legislation about the mentally retarded, juveniles, and life without parole; and methods of execution used. Included are State Summaries with facts and history, and a table of comparisons. Courtroom Cases presents various issues for jury selection and four actual cases. There is also a Teacher's Guide.

Facts about the death penalty, including executions by year, by state, by method used; botched executions; list of individuals executed (1976-1998). Full-text reports on a variety of topics relating to capital punishment, including race and the death penalty, politicizing the death penalty, crisis in death penalty representation, law enforcement views, innocence and the death penalty, and cost of capital punishment.) Most information on the site is against the death penalty.

Death Penalty News
Includes information on current executions in the United States, death penalty related news, statistics on executions by state, statistical summaries, and more. The site is against the death penalty and provides information on contacting U.S. law makers and on actions regarding the death penalty. Up-dated every two weeks.

Amnesty International USA's Program to Abolish the Death Penalty (PADP) works toward the abolition of the death penalty worldwide. The site is against the death penalty
