New classroom for Research Workshops

Over the summer the Library’s demonstration area was converted into a beautiful new classroom for library research workshops.  Make a reservation now to bring in your class(es) for research workshops.  A librarian will teach your students how to find quality sources on any topic.  We can also explain how to evaluate web pages, discuss the pros and cons of Wikipedia, or any other research issue, tailored to your needs.  For more information, call the Reference Desk at x4312 or just schedule a workshop on our online Research Workshop Request Form.

Read Mistress of Spices with our community

Skyline joins the Peninsula Library System in hosting its annual One Book, One Community county-wide reading event.  This year’s book is The Mistress of Spices by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni.  Ms. Divakaruni will kick off the month-long program on October 1st by appearing at the San Mateo County Performing Arts Center.

Thanks to a grant from the President’s Innovation Fund, Skyline is delighted to present 3 events highlighting the book and its themes:

·         On Oct. 7th at noon, Professor Lori Slicton will give a talk on the Anthropology of Cooking: Food & Memory.

·         On Oct. 8th at 7:00 pm, the Duniya Dance & Drum Company will perform in the Theatre.

·         On Oct. 14th at 1:00, we will conclude our celebration of reading with a book discussion in the Library, followed by refreshments and a screening of the film version of The Mistress of Spices

All events are free and open to the public.  For more information, contact Barbara Daley at ext. 4306.

Information literacy requirement to be set

The Curriculum Committee decided at its May 20, 2009 meeting to form an Information Literacy Subcommittee, which is charged with determining the most effective options for information literacy instruction at Skyline College, and how this subject will be established as a required area of study.  This subcommittee will begin its work this semester and make its recommendations to the Curriculum Committee in Spring 2010. If you have any questions regarding information literacy at Skyline, please contact Dennis Wolbers at x4184 or Wolbers@smccd.edu

Library Staff Changes

In August, we said goodbye to Angela Viviani (Enjoy your retirement, Angela!) and we have welcomed Li Wang, who is working evenings and Saturdays.

Media collection now in Library
DVDs move up from Learning Center

Skyline Library is now the place to put media items on reserve for your classes. Over the summer, the media collection moved from the Learning Center to the Library. Students check out DVDs and CDs on their PLS library cards and play them on any library computer. They need to bring their own headphones or ear buds. We also have two VHS players. To put media on reserve, please use our Faculty Reserve Request Form and if you have any questions about any media items, call or email Sandra Kirkpatrick at x4311 or kirkpatrick@smccd.edu.

Skyline Library now features wireless printing
Print directly from laptops or from your home computer!

If you want to print files from your laptop when you are in the library, you no longer have to first email them to yourself and then download and print them from library computers. Also, if you’re at home without access to a printer and would like to print out at the Skyline Library printers, you can now simply click on the link from our Library home page and send your files to our printers.  When you come into the library, the files will be waiting for you to print out.  For directions on how to use our wireless printing, click here.

Can’t find the full-text of a journal article?

Do you have a citation to a journal article, but you can’t find the full-text online? Have you seen an abstract of an article on the Web, but to retrieve the full article will cost $$?  It is likely Skyline librarians can access the full article and send you a copy of the article within a day at no cost.  All you have to do is use our Article Delivery Service on the Library home page.

Ask a librarian online

Anytime you have a question for a librarian, you can post your question on our online eReference form and a librarian will respond to you within 24 hours (during weekdays.)  Of course, you can still call us at x4312 or come in and see us in person!

Get your library card here

Students, faculty and staff may get library cards in a matter of minutes.  All that’s needed is photo ID. (For students who live outside San Mateo County, proof of registration is also required.)  The Peninsula Library System (PLS) card provides access to the collections of over 30 city and county libraries, the three SMCCD college libraries, and the combined database subscriptions to thousands of journals, magazines and other periodicals.  It just might be the last free thing on earth!
