What is SB 1143 and the Student Success Task Force (SSTF)? Senate Bill 1143, written by Senator Carol Liu, was passed on June 4, 2010 (22-11) resulting in formation of the Student Success Task Force (SSTF). The SSTF put together recommendations that would amend Title V and change the mission, scope, and operations of the California Community Colleges. The SSTF met monthly for one year and created a list of nine recommendations.
Why is SB 1143 important? The recommendations are now being developed into bills that will change the laws that govern community colleges. The recommendations address: allocation of funds, repeatability of courses, apportionment, mandatory student education plans, changes to BOG waiver eligibility, limits on units taken outside of a student's education plan, mandatory common assessment, and other critical elements of the community college system.
What is Skyline College Academic Senate doing in response?
- A campus-wide forum was held on December 8th, 2011. Information has been collected and is posted here regularly.
- The District Academic Senate will meet with legislator Jerry Hill on April 27, 2012, and with legislator Rich Gordon on May 4, 2012 to discuss the impact of the SSTF Recommendations.
- Legislators do not necessarily know the details and impact of the SSTF recommendations, and they are not aware of how CCCs feel about them unless we talk to them. This is the time to talk to our legislators!
