The Business program prepares students with a foundation in business, accounting, economics, and data processing to pursue a bachelor's degree. Business students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university should complete this major.

Upon completion of the program students will be able to:
- Critical Thinking - Apply critical thinking and analytical skills in decision making and problem solving.
- Accounting/Financial Accounting - Understand and apply accounting principles to prepare financial statements.
- Business Law - Develop an understanding of the law and the legal environment as it relates to business operations, including its ethical implications.
- Intro to Business Information Systems - Identify the basics of information technology and apply software applications to enhance efficiency of business functions.
- Business Communications - Create effective oral and written business communications utilizing modern communication technologies.
- Economics/Macroeconomics - Demonstrate knowledge of basic economic concepts and how they affect business.
Business programs prepare students for a wide range of executive, administrative, and managerial occupations such as administrative services managers, educational administrators, financial managers, general managers and top executives, government executives, management analysts and consultants, merchandising managers, and specialized managers for health services, hospitality, marketing, construction, advertising, real estate, and data processing firms. Many positions in business require extensive training, education, or work experience in other disciplines.
Recent graduates usually obtain entry, assistant, or junior level positions and may advance with successful work experience, additional education, and participation in company sponsored training programs. Higher level positions are usually filled by promoting lower level managers who display the leadership, self-confidence, motivation, decisiveness, and flexibility required for these demanding assignments.
Specific job descriptions vary greatly by industry, by nature and size of the organization, and by level of responsibility. At the highest level of responsibility, general managers and top executives formulate policy and direct the operations of private companies and government agencies. They maintain the efficiency and profitability of organizations and direct the activities of departments within the framework of the organization's overall plan and goals.
At intermediate levels, business positions are usually associated with responsibility for the management of the operations of specific departments and organizational units. Such positions usually require management skills and an in depth knowledge of the function and day to day responsibilities of the department. As examples, a controller in a financial institution would be responsible for the preparation and accuracy of all financial reports; a medical records administrator would establish and implement departmental policies, goals, and procedures; and, a convention services manager would coordinate the activities of a large hotel's various departments for meetings, conventions, and other special events.
Entry level positions may involve work as assistant managers, trainees, or as supervisors in departments that provide less complex administrative support services.
Qualifications and Skills Needed
The qualifications for business positions vary significantly. Top level management positions frequently require graduate level training in business administration and extensive work experience. Intermediate level positions may require a bachelor's degree in business or a related field and formal education and/or work experience in the activities of the assignment. For some entry level and supervisory positions an associate's degree is sufficient.
Persons interested in careers in business should have good judgment, an ability to communicate clearly and persuasively, self-confidence, good problem solving and analytical skills, leadership qualities, flexibility, and a willingness to obtain formal training in other areas.
